Moroccan and Algerian shipping lines

In 2007, the operational subsidiaries of the Algerian CNAN group have been privatised. Dario Perioli acquired CNAN MED and GO FAST-AIGLE AZUR purchased CNAN Nord and CNAN Maghreb Lines. The Moroccan shipowner Comanav was bought by CMA CGM.

A new terminal for Callao in Peru

DP World is building a new container terminal at the port of Callao in Peru. Annual container handling capacity should reach 1.3 m teu instead of today’s 600 000teu. The terminal should be in service by 2010. Callao port is the first south American port and handles 70% of Peru’s sea traffic.

Moroccan port reform

Moroccan port reform seems to have been successful. On December 2006 a separation between stevedoring companies and port authorities occurred. Since July 2007 any shipowner can start a shipping line from Morocco due to market liberalisation. However, opening a ferry line is subject to certain standards. Projects of infrastructure modernisation and building of hubs have been successfully completed.

Mediterranean Union benefits Tunisia

An educational institution in sea transport professions will be created in Tunisia in cooperation with France as part of the Mediterranean Union according to a signed agreement between Tunisia and France on April 30.

The Russian-Ukrainian largest freighter worldwide

The building of the world’s largest freighter the An – 124 – 100 Rouslan which was stopped in 1995 will resume. The plane will be built by the Russian – Ukrainian company Antonov. The plane has a capacity of 150 tons.

Two sea gateways to Morocco

The port of Casablanca and the new port of Tangier Med (14 km from Spain on the Gibraltar straight) are the two sea gateways to Morocco. Tangier Med 1 is already operational and by Autumn 2008 when Tangier Med 2 will be completed, capacity will increase to 3 m teu. Tangier Med will then be the first Mediterranean port ahead of Algesiras and Gioia Tauro according to TMSA’s development director (Tangier Med special agency). The ports of Casablanca and Tangier will be linked by a railway line.

Indian ports' progress

Indian port activity increased by 12% from April 2007 to March 2008 compared to the same period the year before. General cargo increased by 25.3%. The first Indian port is Kandla with a 64.9mt cargo traffic. Jawaharlal-Nehru Port is the first port in terms of container throughput with 4 059 m teu. Chennai is second and handled 1 m teu.

The owner of seven UK airports

BAA group which was acquired by the Spanish Ferrovial group in 2006 owns seven of the largest airports in the UK. The UK Competition Commission said BAA's ownership of seven UK airports "may not be serving well the interests of either airlines or airlines' customers". A probe into BAA airport ownership is under way. “Provisional findings” would be published in August. Transport minister launched a review of the economic regulation of the UK airport system.

Reform bill of French ports

The French port reform bill was adopted by the council of ministers on 23 April. It will be presented before parliament mid May. The French government wants to integrate ports and transfer dock workers, gantry crane drivers and port workers as a whole into private stevedoring firms and is ready to increase port investments. According to the port reform bill, employers and trade unions have 6 months to reach an agreement on port workers’ transfer conditions.

European open sky

The president of IATA (International Association of Air transport) asked European countries for the creation of an European open sky which would improve air transport efficiency by 12% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Extending Poti port in Georgia

Georgia signed an agreement with an Emirati investment company to extend the port of Poti on the Black Sea over a 400 acres area, and for the construction of an industrial free trade zone.

Eurotunnel’s truck traffic on the increase

In the first quarter of 2008 Eurotunnel’s truck traffic increased by 10% in comparison with the same period in 2007. For the month of March alone a record 135 085 trucks were transported.

Merging of Delta Airlines and Northwest

Delta Airlines, the third American airline company and Northwest, the fifth one will merge to form a new entity called Delta. Delta Airlines is set up in New York, Atlanta, South America and the Caribbean. Northwest is set up in Asia, particularly in Tokyo and in west central America.

Extending Akaba port in Jordania

The Jordanian government signed an agreement with an Emirati investment company to extend Akaba port along the Red Sea. The port is situated in a free zone. The port of Akaba would be extended to the south over a 350 acres zone to help develop tourist and port activity.

China’s first 10 000 teu container ship

The first 10 000 teu containership built in China will be used by Cosco on the AEN (Asia Europe North) rotation. It is the first containership of a series of four.
