K Line a lancé une nouvelle liaison quotidienne en mer noire reliant Port Said aux ports maritimes turques et de la mer noire. Deux nouveaux portes conteneurs d’une capacité de 864 evp chacun ont été affrétés pour ce nouveau service, qui débutera fin décembre et effectuera une rotation entre Port Said, Istanbul, Odessa, Constanza, Varna, Istanbul, Port Said.

Les services mer rouge de Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd et Cosco fusionnent pour former un seul service reliant la Chine à l’Asie du sud-est et la mer rouge. Six navires de 2700 evp opéreront sur cette nouvelle ligne, quatre sont fournis par Evergreen et un par chacun de ses partenaires. Le directeur général de Evergreen Marine Corp, Arnold Wang a indiqué que le marché de la mer rouge devenait de plus en plus important pour les exportateurs de la Chine du sud. Les touchées sont directes et les navires plus grands, a expliqué Arnold Wang.

L’opérateur britannique de fret ferroviaire Ews International a obtenu du ministère français des Transports un Certificat de Sécurité l’autorisant à exploiter des trains de fret sur le réseau français. Ews International qui va opérer en France sous l’enseigne Euro Cargo Rail, va ainsi devenir le troisième opérateur de fret ferroviaire dans l’Hexagone. Connex (groupe Veolia Environnement) avait été en juin le premier opérateur privé à faire circuler un train de marchandises sur le réseau ferré français, concurrençant ainsi la SNCF. Le lancement officiel d’Euro Cargo Rail aura lieu en fin d’année et le premier train de fret de cette nouvelle compagnie devrait circuler cet hiver.

Long de 34,6 km, le tunnel du Lötschberg reliera en Suisse, Frutigen, (canton de Berne) à Rarogne (canton du Valais). Il s’agit d’une infrastructure de transport essentielle entre le Nord et le Sud de l’Europe. Commencés en juillet 1999, les travaux s’achèveront courant 2007. Première liaison alpine de l’axe Bâle-Milan, le Lötschberg assurera un service dit de navette qui permettra le transport de camions jusqu’à 4 m de hauteur, sur des wagons couverts comme sous la Manche. Ce système autorisera des vitesses de 200 à 250 km/h pour les trains voyageurs, et de 100 à 160 km/h pour les trains de fret. Sur l’axe Lötscheberg-Simplon, la Suisse se traversera alors en à peine 2h. Il est prévu la circulation de 110 trains par jour, 30 de voyageurs et 80 de fret, certains de 4.000 T de charge et 1.500 m de long ! Les travaux sont financés par un fonds alimenté pour l’essentiel par les recettes encaissées au titre de la redevance poids lourds (RPLP), par 0,1% sur la TVA, une taxe sur les carburants et par emprunts. Le Lötschberg est un modèle à suivre pour les projets Lyon-Turin et Brenner. Dans leur conception et leur futur et surtout dans leur mode de financement.

Bruxelles reproche à l’Italie de ne pas avoir fait “d’analyse d’impact environnemental” de la construction du pont. L’Italie pourrait de ce fait enfreindre la législation européenne sur la protection des oiseaux. Bruxelles a envoyé une lettre de mise en demeure aux autorités italiennes. En cas de réponse insatisfaisante dans un délai de deux mois, elle sera suivie d’un dernier avertissement écrit invitant l’Italie à respecter le droit communautaire, puis le cas échéant d’une saisine de la Cour européenne de justice. La Commission pourrait aussi bloquer les fonds européens pour la construction de ce pont, voir article sur le pont.

Pakistan Airlines a ouvert le 22 octobre une liaison régulière tout cargo à partir de l’aéroport de Bâle-Mulhouse-Fribourg, dans le cadre d’une rotation démarrant à Cologne, se poursuivant à Istanbul pour s’achever à Karachi. Le vol hebdomadaire s’effectuera à bord d’un Airbus A300. La compagnie relance le fret aérien de l’EuroAirport, freiné ce printemps par l’arrêt de l’un des deux vols de Malaysia Airlines et la suspension de celui de Korean Air. Le transporteur coréen a cependant repris cet automne une liaison hebdomadaire, par un Boeing 747-400 F.

Des compagnies charter et des transporteurs aériens du monde entier se sont impliqués dans la réponse immédiate au tremblement de terre qui a dévasté le nord du Pakistan. Air Charter Service a pu emmener trois équipes de secours britanniques ainsi que leurs équipement à Islamabad, seulement 30 heures après avoir reçu un appel d’urgence du département de développement international du gouvernement britannique. Tandis que le travail de recherche et de secours se poursuit, ACS a indiqué que l’on se concentrait maintenant sur l’aide aux millions de survivants sans abri, manquant de médicaments, de nourriture et d’eau potable. Emirate SkyCargo a indiqué qu’il a transporté des centaines de tonnes de matériel de secours à destination d’Islamabad sur plusieurs avions cargo B747 et A310, comme des véhicules, tentes, couvertures, denrées alimentaires et médicaments parfois gratuitement. Gulf Air Cargo a lui confirmé qu’il transportait gratuitement le matériel de secours de tout point de son réseau vers les zones ravagées du Pakistan, à savoir Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad et Karachi. Spanish airline Iberia contribue aux missions de secours au Guatemala dévasté par l’ouragan Stan, en transportant jusqu’à 50 tonnes de matériel médical et autre.

K Line is starting a new weekly Black Sea service connecting Port Said with Turkish and Black Sea ports. Two new 864teu vessels have been chartered for the new service, which will begin in late December on a rotation of Port Said Istanbul, Odessa, Constanza, Varna, Istanbul, Port Said.

Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd and Cosco are merging their two Red Sea services into a single service linking China, South east Asia and the Red Sea. Six 2,700teu vessels will be deployed on the new service, four provided by Evergreen and one each from its partners. Evergreen Marine Corp’s president Arnold Wang said the Red Sea market was increasingly important for exporters in southern China. Calls are direct and vessels larger, said Arnold Wang.

The British operator for rail freight, EWS International obtained a safety certificate from the French Transport Ministry to operate freight trains on French railway lines. EWS International will be operating in France under the name of Euro Cargo Rail, thus becoming the third railway freight operator in France. In June Connex (Veolia Environment Group) became the 1st private operator to use a freight train on the French railway, thus competing with SNCF, the French railway company. The official launch of Euro Cargo Rail will take place at the end of the year and its first freight train should be running this winter.

The 34,6 km long tunnel will link Frutigen in The Bern canton to Rarogne in the Valais canton in Switzerland. It is an infrastructure essential to traffic between the North and South of Europe. Work started in July 1999 and will end in 2007. As the first Alpine link of the Basel–Milan axis, the Lötschberg will ensure a shuttle service transporting trucks 4m in height on covered wagons like those used in the Channel tunnel. The system will allow for speed ranging between 200 and 250 km/h for passenger trains and 100 to 160 km/h for freight trains. Using the Lötschberg–Simplon axis, it will take less than two hours to cross Switzerland. It is estimated that 110 trains will circulate daily, 30 passenger and 80 freight, some of them weighing 4000 tonnes and 1500 metres long! Work is financed by funds collected from fees on trucks, 0,1% of VAT, a fuel tax and by loans. The Lötschberg is a model to follow for Lyon-Turin and Brenner projects, in their conception, their future and most of all in their financing.

Brussels reproached Italy for not making a study of environmental impact, because Italy could be breaking the European legislation for the protection of birds. Brussels sent a formal notice to Italian authorities. In a case of an unsatisfactory answer, within two months, it will be followed by a final written warning telling Italy to respect the community law, and if need be a referral to the European court of justice. The commission could freeze European funds towards the building of the bridge, See the article about the bridge.

On October 22, Pakistan airlines started a regular all cargo line from the Basel-Muhlouse-Fribourg airport on a rotation starting at Cologne continuing to Istanbul and ending at Karachi. An airbus A300 will operate the weekly flight. The company is boosting air freight traffic from Euro Airport which slowed down this spring due to the suspension of one of the two flights of Malaysia Airlines and that of Korean Air. The Korean carrier however resumed a weekly service by Boeing 747-400F, this autumn.

Charter brokers and carriers from around the world have been heavily involved in the immediate response to the devastating earthquake in northern Pakistan. Air Charter Service was able to get three UK search rescue teams and their equipment to Islamabad within 30 hours of receiving an urgent call from the UK government’s Department for International Development. While the search and rescue work continued, ACS said the focus had now largely shifted to aiding the millions of survivors left without shelter, medicine, food and clean water. Emirate SkyCargo said it had sent hundreds of tonnes of relief supplies to Islamabad via several B747 and A310 freighter flights, including vehicles, tents, blankets, food and medicines, with some capacity provided free of charge. Gulf Air Cargo said it was offering free of charge transport for relief cargo from any of the points in its network to all the affected parts in Pakistan, namely Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. Spanish airline Iberia is contributing to help relief operations in Guatemala following Hurricane Stan, flying up to 50 tonnes of medical and other aid materials there.
