The port of Santos twinned with Marseilles-Fos portThe port of Santos (the first in Brazil) is twinned with the port of Marseilles-Fos according to an agreement which was signed on April 25 by Jose Carlos Mello Rego President of CODESP (Sao Paulo state docks Company) and by Jean Pierre Billat, Director of marseilles’ port. This agreement officializes the existence of a privileged cooperation between both ports including the expansion of existing maritime lines. The "autonomous" port of la RochelleLa Rochelle's port became "autonomous" January 1 and wants to increase its capacity to welcome even bigger ships, one of its strong points, and become equipped with new quays. Dutch ro-ro service set for launchAn ambitious plan to run a rail-ferry service between the UK and the Netherlands could launch later this summer. The EU has backed the scheme with E2.5 m of funds from its Marco Polo programme, but it stressed the money was tied to the amount of freight shifted by the service. Likely cargo included manufactured goods and automotive products. The route would also be able to carry chemicals and waste products that are banned from the Channel Tunnel. Presidential visit to Brazil and ChileOn Wednesday, Jacques Chirac began a four day visit to Brazil and to Chile to strengthen France's bonds with two countries whose emerging economy is considered exemplary in an unstable region and to help French companies gain new markets. Growth in Brazil should accelerate in 2006 to reach 5% and Chile's economyconsidered to be the most competitive in Latin America should reach 6%. France however only expects a growth of 2 to 2,5%. The delegation includes five ministers (Foreign Affairs, Defense, Economy, Education and Industry) and twenty CEOs from companies such as ALSTOM, SAINT-GOBAIN, AREVA, SUEZ, THALES. According to M. Bonnafont, the president's spokesman, there is a very strong potential for development in Brazilian and French trade.
